Hi. Captain Larry here. Many of you may be wondering how the recovery effort is making out after Irma and Maria, both category 5 hurricanes with sustained winds over 150 mph. Irma was a direct hit on Saint Thomas and Saint John, causing most of the damage here. Maria hit Saint Croix, about 45 miles south, before moving to the northwest to wreck havoc with Puerto Rico.
The good news is that Saint Thomas and Saint John are both open for business. Electricity is restored to 95% of the islands and supermarkets and restaurants are open. The no-tax, no-tariff shops are open and the beaches are cleared of debris. Cruise ships returned in mid-November. If you are visiting on a cruise ship, think about getting away for the day with a customized voyage on IslandFlyer.
Places to Stay
The big resorts, like the Westin and Caneel Bay on Saint John and the Ritz Carlton, Marriott and Sugar Bay on Saint Thomas, will not open for most of this year while they do repairs and upgrades. Most of the smaller properties, like Bolongo Bay, Bluebeards Beachfront and Best Western Emerald Bay, have re-opened, along with the vacation clubs at the Marriott, Ritz and Margaritaville. FEMA personnel and other recovery contractors continue to occupy a number of the rooms. If you have trouble finding a place to stay, don’t forget to check out VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) and Air BnB, both of which have a lot of resort condos and homes available.
